Protocol 28 is already being tested in Pi Testnet, and subsequently can be modified and tested before being integrated into the network managing actual balances. The staged rollout is after successful completion of Protocol 27 on Mainnet
As stated by the team, Protocol 28 enhances the network to use the delayed transaction data during consensus. It also allows developers to update a set of smart contracts at once and manipulate stored data more securely
Following the successful completion of the Protocol 27 upgrade on Pi Mainnet, Pi Testnet has upgraded to Protocol 28

All Node operators must upgrade their nodes to Protocol 28 by October 13, 2026, in preparation for the Mainnet Protocol 28 network upgrade on October 16, 2026
